Chapter Ten

Everyone in the Dash-in Diner stopped what they were doing and stared at the couple.

Catherine Winter stood and shrieked, “You’re an idiot. I told you months ago it needed to be done. You are so selfish and crude.”

“Crude? CRUDE?”

“You heard me. You thought I didn’t know about your little fling with your old high school flame. Well, this is the final straw. I’m done! We’re done!” She tossed her napkin on the table and put her hands on her hips, challenging him to respond.

Being a frustrated high school actor, Randall was into it. “You never stop. Nag, nag, nag. It never ends. I’m done, too. And you can do whatever you want, just don’t do it at my house anymore.”

“Your house? YOUR house? Since when? I’ve contributed for years, doing everything for you and YOUR business. I’m done with you. I will be moving out today and my lawyer will be contacting you.”

Randall continued his tirade. “You women, can’t live with you once you get their feelings just a little bit hurt.” He shook his head, dropped some bills on the table, and waved at the spectators. “Hope you enjoyed the show. We’re done now.” He stormed off, ignoring the shocked faces on the astonished onlookers.

Cinda and her mother, Ada, rushed to the table where Catherine sat sobbing.

“Honey, no man is worth being this upset.” Ada put her arms around Catherine. “Things’ll work out. You just wait and see. He’ll be back, all apologetic.”

Catherine looked up and sniffed. “I don’t want him back. I’ve wasted too many years with him, hoping he’d change.”

Ada patted her back. “I understand. You just let it all out.”

Wiping her eyes, she looked at Cinda. “Do you still have an apartment vacancy at Snowball Village? I can’t possibly spend another minute with that man. I told him I would move and I fully intend to.”

“Of course, it’s yours. What can I do to help?”

“Um, could you or someone come help me pack? I don’t want to be alone with HIM right now.”

Ada and Cinda both responded. “Of course!”

“Thank you. This means so much to me.”

Cinda squeezed her arm. “And I’ll help you decide what other household things you need to bring to feel at home.”

Ada added, “The apartments have all the basics, so you won’t need much. All I brought was clothes and some personal items. Linens and kitchen stuff are already there. You’ll be fine.”

Catherine winked at Cinda over Ava’s shoulder. “Thank you both,” she sniffed.

Randall put his phone on mute, but before he could put it down, a text came in from Catherine.

“You were amazing. I never knew you could be such a great actor.”

“Main character in all three of my high school plays. It was fun.”

You doing okay?”

“Fine, just wish everyone would quit texting me. Not you, though. Where are you?”

“I’m in the car with Cinda and her mother. We will be at the house in 15-20 minutes. Can you go somewhere?”

“No problem. I’m going to throw a few things in a bag and head out to my brother’s.
